It occurred to me while reading "Northern Frights" by Dennis Boyer how much in common a genealogy researcher has with a paranormal researcher. Our pursuits are similar; paranormal researchers and genealogists both follow leads, looking for confirmation and evidence of lives gone by.
"You're no longer the bystander. No longer the curious guy playing a scavenger hunt for ghosts. No, this is for real. You're part of the dynamic now...When you study something close up, you become part of it and change it. But don't even think of stopping. You're in this until the end like the rest of us. It's too late to go home to your farm and act as if your journey never happened."
"They are in the lodge with us now. They are on both sides of you...You've brought out the old trapper, the French trader, and the warriors. They're here for you."
--Northern Frights, page 83.
The book itself is concerned with good ghost stories from Wisconsin. There are plenty of place names, but no people names.
I find when the brick walls and lack of primary sources get me frustrated, reading something besides lineage books helps get me back in the hunt for my own ghosts.
